ABOUT ME

TAKING THE CREATIVE PATH

Over the past 40 years I have been searching for my space in the world and my journey has been both varied and adventurous. I have been a Primary School Teacher, a Musician in the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, completed a degree in Graphic Design, worked in a Japanese Design Company based out of Osaka, worked in, and on Radio, both in Australia and Japan, and studied Bookbinding. I fell in love with paper sculpture, participated in a small group exhibition in 2012, became a winner in the Australian Craft Awards in 2013 and was featured in the American Magazine, Cloth Paper Scissors early in 2014.

At the beginning of 2014 I decided to further my education (once again!) and began studying a Diploma in Photo Imaging at the Canberra Institute of Technology. It was here that I discovered the stunning beauty of black & white photography.

Photography has led to another great adventure in my life’s journey. I was a finalist in the Head On Portrait Prize in 2015 and won the overall CIT/UN Photographic Prize that same year, resulting in an internship with the UNWomen’s Office Fiji, in September 2015. As a result of the images I captured during my UN internship, I was selected by the 2016 Head On Photographic Festival to be an Associate Exhibitor and presented my first solo photographic exhibition Beneath the Bula Smile in both Sydney and Canberra during May and June 2016.

In October 2016, I took up the position of photographer at the Canberra Weekly Magazine. Over the period of a week I would capture images ranging from the culinary delights of Canberra’s varied restaurants, models wearing designer fashion, and portraits of actresses, politicians, and other members of the community that had distinguished themselves in some way. It was a huge challenge, very exciting and incredibly rewarding.

At the beginning of 2019 and with 38 local magazine covers to my name, I decided to try my hand at going freelance, giving me time to think and develop my artistic practice. After a busy and successful year I set up a studio of my own, with portraiture as my primary focus. However, instead of multiple bookings and a smooth transition, I found myself having to navigate Covid 19 and lockdowns for almost two years.

But all is well…..and it is now 2024!

I now specialise in promotional photography required by small independent theatre companies. Collaborating with both actors and artistic directors has proven to be yet another interesting adventure!

My website is definitely out of date and will slowly be refreshed when I find the time. To see my latest work, or to keep up with me, please take a look at my Instagram account @eva.schroeder.photographer.
